G(r)owanus is the first permanent affordable housing project in Brooklyn’s Gowanus neighborhood, a historically industrial hub that fell into disrepair due to years of pollution and neglect. The Gowanus Canal, once vital to the area’s economy, became severely contaminated, despite efforts to improve water circulation. The Gowanus Revitalize Plan: SpongePark is a key step in reinvigorating the area, proposing a public park along the canal’s perimeter to connect neighborhoods and create opportunities for affordable housing and local jobs. G(r)owanus leads this transformation, integrating sustainable design with community-focused development.
